The contrast of dappled sunlight on the steps, and the design of the gateway, interested me enough to warrant a painting. There are many entrances to the Hoad, some are gated and retain their rusty charm, like this one at the top of Belmont in Ulverston.

Standing within this shadow I enjoyed looking outwards into the sun glazed channel. I have painted this in the hope of recreating a moment of solitude; calm water ripples and motionless boats offer a sense of peace in this quiet corner of Walney.
